The currency of Latvia is the Latvian Lat, with one Lat equalling 100 santims. Notes come in denominations of Ls500, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5, with coins coming in denominations of Ls2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 santims. Bureau de changes are available across larger towns in banks, shops, hotels and post offices, with the easiest currencies to exchange being US Dollars and German Deutschmark (which, despite Germany’s adoption of the Euro is still surprisingly widely used). Traveller’s cheques are accepted in bureaus, though they should be taken in either US Dollars or Pounds Sterling to avoid additional conversion charges. ATMs are available in most towns and a great deal of international credit cards are accepted in hotels and petrol stations – some shops in Riga also accept credit cards.
