EU membership and an impetus on encouraging foreign investment means that the Latvian off plan property market has opened up no end in recent years, and the buying process is relatively simple. Foreigners are treated a great deal better than they have been in the past, and they are party to the same legal rights as any native Latvian. It should be noted that as a former Communist state, Latvia is subject to the same potential pitfalls as other former Soviet countries and all land titles should be checked in detail to ensure legality of ownership, as reclamations can be lost and confused over time.
