Roads are generally of a decent standard throughout Latvia, with strong links through the country and fairly short distances wherever one travels – though expect to see a lot of potholes on the way. Drivers should be aware that cars must have their headlights on at all times when travelling, 24 hours a day for the entire year. Buses are very popular in Latvia and are actually a better option than the train in some respects – the offer cheap travel and link to all major towns in the country and a lot of smaller, more rural ones. Other public transport available includes taxis, trolleybuses and trams which all operate in Riga from 0530 to 0000. Latvia has a reasonable railway network, with most major towns linked. Unfortunately this seems to be an area where the country takes a step back, and as such (as previously mentioned) it is a better option to take a bus in a fair few cases. Tickets should always be bought in advance, but be wary of opting for the ‘express’ option – these are still painfully slow.
